About the Author

語言學涉獵面其實很廣，舉凡任何和語言甚至文字有關的現象，都值得深入探討和分析。作為語言的研究者，作者相信任何一個人張嘴吐舌，發放聲音，每個聲音、每個詞語、每個句子，都是按著一定的規律組合，表達自己心中想表達的意思；要是在聲音高低、用詞造句方面，略有挪動，那麼表達的意思或語氣也就有所不同。作者的研究重點放在漢語，對歷時和共時變化的觀察、對方言之間的異同、對漢語教學所面對的各種課題，都有精闢的見解。

香港中文大學學士、碩士，美國加州大學柏克萊分校博士。1994年任教柏克萊，2000年榮休。後轉香港科技大學執教，2004年出任香港中文大學中國語言文學系講座教授，2010年榮休。
